It is the second day of the debate training during the holidays. We used the computer lab to do our research for the main topic of the day : THWB(This House Would Ban) Guns.

On the previous day, we were given an assignment to research on various topics, 'limiting gun ownership' just being one of them. Following which, Ms Amanda showed us a format on how we should structure our script.
We had to do 'fill in' the format structure, so here is my example.

THWB GUNS @ http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=33

What kind of fire arms should be allowed to be privately owned?

-Handguns only (Check with Wikipedia)

Who should have the right to own fire arms? (Eligible)

-Conditions:

-Australia: To obtain a full firearm license, a person must pass a background check... (Wikipedia) …Self defense is not a reason…

What are the reasons/ examples/ shooting incidences that led to the banning of guns?

-Columbine High School massacre

-Toddlers accidentally shooting their friends (Gun control law)

Why do people want guns for?

-Self defence. Why? Right to defend one’s self, especially when the law enforcement agencies are inadequate or inefficient in some countries. (US bills of rights –research.)

-Then why do countries that ban guns, like Singapore, have lower gun violence cases? Do guns really offer protection? Or do they increase crime rates?

Proposition

Opposition

Case set-up:

1. Definition (include yardstick, team stance if necessary.): Gun ownership- The state or fact of exclusive rights and control over property.

Clarification:

2. Contextualisation: Limited to 1st world countries (Australia, USA) where the common public have access to guns and gun-related crimes are common.

Case division:

Substantives: 1) Guns endanger the safety of the society. Guns are highly dangerous and should as far as possible be removed as a threat.

Many can abuse the guns and use them to kill others. Some supposedly legal licensed people went mad and kill others. Guns also do provide a source of murder for enraged people.

For example, a massacre took place on April 20, 1999 in Columbine High School in New York, when students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and one teacher, and wounded 23 others, before taking their own lives.

Besides enabling people to kill easier, guns also do attract people to murder.

A study conducted by Athur Kellermann showed that from the details in homicide cases, the risk of a crime of passion or other domestic dispute ending in a fatal injury was much higher when a gun was readily available, as compared to a lower rate of fatality in domestic violence not involving a firearm.

This proves that guns are highly dangerous and must not be accessible to the public. Therefore, we propose that guns are to be banned to te general public.

Case set-up:

Yardstick: In Australia, people must have a license to own guns. To obtain a full firearm license a person must pass a background check, a basic course of firearm safety and be at least 18 years of age. This restricts and controls the ownership of guns.

Licence holders are also limited to carry a certain category of guns, usually only handguns. Ammunition in guns are also controlled and limited.

Ever since the Monash University shooting in Australia in 2002, the government made changes to further enforce laws on gun ownership. Changes included a 10-round magazine capacity limit, a calibre limit of not more than 9.65 mm, a barrel length limit of not less than 120 mm for semi-automatic pistols and 100 mm for revolvers.

Rebuttals: Banning guns does not necessarily lower crime rates. It is the rights of the citizens to protect themselves. Many others also use guns to protect their livestock from attacking wild animals.

Case division:

Substantives: The guns are not the threat- the criminals are. Most guns used in crimes are illegally smuggled in rather then stolen from legal owners.

The citizes need the guns as a source of self defense against the criminals. With guns, they can better protect themselves against robbers or burglars at home. This increases the safety of the citizens.

Criminals who have guns would think twice on stealing from families with guns. There is a positive deterrent effect on the criminals which is effective on reducing gun-related crime rates.

A study conducted by Project Safe Neighborhoods showed that there is a very significant decline in gun crime in police districts that implemented PSN compared to neighbouring districts in Chicago.

It is the people’s right to defend oneself, especially when the law enforcement agencies are inadequate or inefficient in some countries. Banning the use of guns would not give the people the right to fight for their own safety in an event of an attack of armed robbery.

This conflicts with the US Bill Of Rights, which prohibits the Congress from making any law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, forbids infringement of the right of the people to keep and bear Arms.

Furthermore, the banning of guns would only spur others to buy from black markets, were age limit and ammunition are not controlled. Being controlled by the law and legalising guns are a better alternative to control the firearms.

Therefore, we propose for guns to be legalised, as it better ensures the safety of the people and the law.

Sorry for it being long... as least its there.

Think of these questions...

How often are guns used in self defense?

-A national survey conducted by Dr. Gary Kleck showed that 88% of the violent crimes which respondents [Rs] reported to NCVS interviewers in 1992 were committed away from the victim's home, i.e., in a location where it would ordinarily be a crime for the victim to even possess a gun, never mind use it defensively.

Liberalized concealed carry laws
Liberalized concealed laws are a set of requirements, when met by an applicant, require the issuance of a concealed carry permit, which allows a permit holder to carry a gun (concealed) in public places.

David Kopel, Research Director at the Independence Institute stated that allowing more people to carry guns does not cause an increase in crime. In Florida, where 315,000 permits have been issued, there are only five known instances of violent gun crime by a person with a permit.

Is a gun an effective mean of self defense?
-According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the most effective form of self-protection is use of a gun. For robbery the self-protection meaures with the lowest loss rates were among victims attacking the offender with a gun, and victims threatenting the offender with a gun.
For confrontational burglarly, attacking with a gun had the second lowest loss rate of sixteen self-protection measures, bested only by another mode of armed self-protection, threatening the offender with a nongun weapon.

Does gun ownership deter burglaries?
-
According to studies involving interviews of felons, one of the reasons the majority of burglars try to avoid occupied homes is the chance of getting shot.n studies involving interviews of felons, one of the reasons the majority of burglars try to avoid occupied homes is the chance of getting shot.

Is my own gun more likely to be used against me or my family?
- Studies by doctors Arthur Kellermann and Don Reay show that a homeowner's gun was 43 times more likely to kill a family member, friend, or acquaintence, than it was used to kill someone in self-defense.

Finally, after that we ended the session by going by a motion:
Since students are not allowed to eat in classrooms, teachers should also not be allowed to eat in the staffroom.
We were then given ten minutes to come up with substantives and debate each other.
This exercise showed the potentially good 'rebutters' in our group and gave us a fun opportunity to speak up and showcase our argument.

Debate is about commitment, effort and time put into the CCA.
